Ferries from Athens to Patmos (and return)

Patmos, part of the Dodecanese islands , is famous for the fortress-monastery perched on the hill overlooking the port. Thankfully Patmos is still not over-run by tourists so you can take a break from the overly crowded touristy islands.

Port of Piraeus

The Port of Piraeus (or Pireas*) can be quite confusing at first. Make sure to allow plenty of time to find your gate (which is written on your ticket) and also be sure to have a map. Make sure to check this interactive map.

All ferries to Patmos (the Dodecanese islands) depart from Port Gate E1.

How long does it take to get from Athens to Patmos?

The journey between Athens (Piraeus) and Patmos takes between 7 and 8 hours, depending on the ferry you are taking.

Is there a high speed ferry between Athens and Patmos?

No.

How much does it cost to get from Athens to Patmos by ferry?

The ticket prices depend on the type of seat and class you prefer, with the deck seats being the cheapest.

An economy seat costs €37.50 per person one way, an airplane type of seat (in one of the lounges) costs €37.50 per person, while if you want to share a 4-berth outside cabin (with shower) you will pay €165 per person. The ferries are operated by Blue Star Ferries.

During the low season 2013 (April-May), the following ferries are available from Athens (Piraeus) to Patmos:

How many ferries per day depart from Athens to Patmos during the high season?

During the 2013 high season (June – October) , the following connections between Athens and Patmos :

Wed 7 p.m., Mar 27 – Jul 3, Jul 10, 17, 24, 31, Aug 7, 14, 21, 28, Sept 4-25, Oct 2-30
Fri 7 p.m., Ma 10 – Jun 28, Jul 5, 12, 19, 26, Aug 2,9, 16, 23, 30, Aug 30- Sept 27, Oct 4-25
Mon 7 p.m., May 13 – Jun 3, Sept 2-23, Sept 30 – Oct 28

Are there any overnight journeys between Athens and Patmos?

Yes, there are several over night ferries between Athens and Patmos. There’s a ferry departing from Piraeus each Monday at 11:30 p.m. year round which arrives in Patmos at 6:45 a.m. During the low season there’s a ferry departing from Piraeus every Friday at 10:30 p.m. and during the high season there’s a ferry departing from Piraeus every Saturday at 11:55 p.m.

However, there’s also a ferry departing on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7 p.m. and although it arrives in Patmos at 2:05 a.m, it can be a good alternative for the over-night journey.

Where can I buy tickets from?

125x125You can purchase ferry tickets online, at most 2 months prior to departure. Also you can purchase them via a travel agency (which in turn will have to purchase them via a reliable Greek travel agency).

A good option is to buy them directly from the port. The ticketing office is at the Port Gate E1 (exactly where the ferries to Patmos depart from). Generally speaking you don’t need to buy your ticket in advance unless you are traveling during the weekend in the middle of the high season (July & August).

Does everyone charge the same prices?

The prices should be the same online and at travel agencies. They also should be the same as those you purchase in the port. Even if there’s a difference, it shouldn’t be significant.

How about the ferries from Patmos to Athens?

During the 2013 high season, the following ferries depart from Patmos to Athens:

Important note:

The ferries schedule is submitted every Friday by the companies to the Ministry of Mercantile Marine which means, in some cases, the online schedule might not be accurate.

Your best bet is to get a copy of the Friday edition of the Athens News (in English) which publishes the ferries schedule weekly.
