Ferries from Thessaloniki to Lesvos (and return)

Remember when the residents of Lesvos (Lesbos) didn’t want to be associated with the word “lesbian” and its well known definition ? If the controversy doesn’t make you want to visit the island of Lesvos then maybe knowing that it boasts incredible beaches, lovely medieval castles and Greek traditional villages might.

Many travelers don’t know that Thessaloniki actually has a port. Unfortunately there aren’t any islands located very close to Greece’s second biggest town but if you plan mix visiting the mainland with a hop on the islands, a very good idea is to travel from Thessaloniki to Lesvos by ferry.

Lesvos, Mytilini or Sigri?

The island of Lesvos is served by two ports: Mytilini and Sigri. Mytilini (or Mytilene) is located on the southeast coast and is the capital city of the island while Sigri is located on the western coast. Mytilini is busier than Sigri although both receive all kinds of vessels.

How long does it take to get from Thessaloniki to Lesvos ?

It takes 9 h 30 min to get from Thessaloniki to Sigri and almost 15 h to get from Thessaloniki to Mytilini.

Is there a high speed ferry between Thessaloniki and Lesvos ?

Sort of. The ferry to Sigri takes only 9 h 30 min to reach the destination.

How much does it cost to get from Thessaloniki to Lesvos by ferry?

The price depends on the type of seat and to which port you are traveling. All prices are one way:

  • to Mytilini: deck €36 per person; aircraft type of seat €36 per person; 2 berth outside cabin €100 per person
  • to Sigri: economy class €33 per person ; air seat in lounge €37 per person ; 2 berth outside cabin €86 per person


How many ferries per day depart from Thessaloniki to Lesvos during the low season?

During the low season 2010, there’s a ferry connecting Thessaloniki to Lesvos (Mytilini) each Sat at 1 a.m.

How many ferries per day depart from Thessaloniki to Lesvos during the high season?

The high season starts by end of May and ends on October 31. The following ferries are available between Thessaloniki and Lesvos during the 2010 high season:

  • to Mytilini: on Sat at 1 a.m. (May 29 to Sept 4 )
  • to Sigri: on Fri at 8 p.m. (June 4 to Sept 24)
  • to Mytilini: on Mon at 7 p.m. (until Oct 25)


Are there any overnight journeys between Thessaloniki and Lesvos ?

All ferries from Thessaloniki to Lesvos can be considered overnight ferries.

How about the ferries from Lesvos to Thessaloniki ?

During the 2010 high season the following ferries are available between Lesvos and Thessaloniki:

  • from Mytilini: on Fri at 8 a.m. (May 28 to Sept 3)
  • from Sigri: on Fri at 8:30 a.m. (June 4 to Sept 24)
  • from Mytilini: on Sun at 6:30 p.m. (until Oct 24)

During low season 2010, there’s one ferry connecting Lesvos (Mytilini) to Thessaloniki each Fri at 8 a.m.


Where can I buy tickets from?

Tickets can be bought online here, either from booking sites or from the companies’ websites. They can also be bought via a travel agent. But probably the easiest way to get tickets is directly from the port, either on the day of departure or several days before you depart.

Does everyone charge the same prices?

The prices are the same in the port, online and at travel agents.

Important note:

The ferry companies submit their schedules each Friday to the Ministry of Mercantile Marine so changes might occur from week to week, let alone from month to month. It is advisable to double check the departures several weeks before departure.
