>>book your accommodation in Symi Town

An absolute must-visit destination in Greece is Symi Town on the island of Symi. This picture postcard town is slightly different from the usual, white-washed houses and blue-domed churches that you will find on most islands in the Dodecanese and Cyclades, but that only makes it all the more special. The pastel buildings appear to tumble down towards the pretty little harbor, and at sunset, the whole town glows golden. It’s easy to reach by ferry http://bit.ly/2fvEbrK from the popular island of Rhodes, and only takes around an hour to get there.

This gorgeous Greek town is also home to some fantastic things to do in Symi. The 18th-century Monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis is an impressive building that still houses monks today, and you can walk around the beautifully kept gardens for a little peace from the bustling harbor.

Symi is also a fantastic place to go hiking, with many trails around the island that offer fantastic views of the sea or lead to pretty private coves and beaches. Make sure you climb to the Kastro for sunset to get incredible panoramic views of the town, sea, and mountains. If the Greek sun is tempting you to fully relax then head to one of Symi’s many beautiful beaches. There is one a short walk north of the town that offers sunbeds, umbrellas, and a variety of water sports activities, or head to somewhere like Pedi beach for a little more privacy.

Destinations in Greece to Visit in 2023: Meteora

meteora

>>book your accommodation in Kalampaka

Meteora is a rock formation in northern Greece best known for its monasteries perched on giant rock pinnacles. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has been a Greek official holy site since 1995 and was listed as such by UNESCO in 1989.

Meteora is also the largest archaeological site and one of Greece’s most stunning and impressive destinations. A visit to this fascinating place is a must on any trip to Greece. You can visit six monasteries in Meteora, but the most famous one is the Great Meteoron Monastery.

This Byzantine-era structure consists of buildings set on huge rock pinnacles, which most people would probably find impossible to get to if it weren’t for the steps. The scenery here is breathtaking, especially considering that the monasteries were built hundreds of years ago!

The remarkable rock formations that make this place unforgettable are what attract people to Meteora, drawing millions of annual visitors.

The impressive rock formations are also an amazing place to go rock climbing! And if you want to have an active trip but prefer a lighter activity, there are plenty of hiking trails meandering between the rocks.

Destinations in Greece to Visit in 2023: Thessaloniki

thessaloniki

>>book your accommodation in Thessaloniki

If Athens is the heart of Greece, Thessaloniki is the soul. It is unlike anywhere else in the country. Not only is it one of the most beautiful Greek cities, it has gorgeous neo-classical buildings, a lovely seafront promenade, 15 UNESCO world heritage sites, amazing museums, great shopping (check out Tsimisksi Street), and because it’s a melting pot of Ottoman, Roman, Sephardic Jewish and Greek cultures, the food scene is phenomenal.

Thessaloniki is one of the most walkable cities in Greece with a temperate climate thanks to its more northern location and being right on the Aegean Sea. It exudes an energetic and vibrant feel, in part because of the three major universities that are located here. As a result of this the nightlife is legendary too, especially in the cool urban neighborhood of Ladadika.

Thessaloniki has been conquered by the Romans, the Ottomans, and faced a massive population exchange in 1923 during the Greco-Turkish War. Greek Orthodox Christians were forced from Asian Minor and arrived in Greece as refugees, and the Muslims in Greece were forced to flee for Turkey. All these influences are evident in the architecture such in neighborhoods like Ano Poli, the historic churches of Agia Sofia, Profitis Ilias, and Agios Dimitrios, ancient sites like the White Tower, Rotunda of Galerius, Yahudi and Bey Hamams, and Trigonion Tower, the music (so many sad Rembetika songs are about Thessaloniki) and the incredible food. Make sure you try the Greek breakfast pastry, bougatsa. You’ll find bougatsa all over Greece, but it comes from Thessaloniki.

If you’re craving beaches, the favored northern Greek holiday beach destination, Halkidiki is just a couple of hours drive away.

Thessaloniki is well connected to the rest of Greece by bus, train, and air, and internationally by air and ferry.

The Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes is not to be missed, while history buffs should head to the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, which houses various collections of archaeological artifacts.

Day tripping is easy with a hire car and the KTEL bus makes the rest of the island easily explored by public transport. Lindos village is a must-see, offering cobbled streets, lined with classic white stone houses. The dramatic hilltop Acropolis is dated between the 3rd–5th century BC and boasts well-preserved remains of an ancient citadel, as well as jaw-dropping views. Those looking for nightlife should head to Pefkos, while Faliraki Water Park is fun for all the family.

Rhodes is easily accessible by flight into Rhodes Diagoras International Airport, either directly or with a change in Athens or Thessaloniki. While ferries serve the island from Athens, Santorini, Crete, Kos, Patmos, Leros, and Simi.
