Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and one of the most popular, so you might expect a vacation here to be expensive. It doesn’t have to be.

Crete has accommodations for every budget, from beachfront studios to family-run hotels in historic towns, and with a little planning you can find a comfortable, well-reviewed place to stay for under €100 a night. Booking early and traveling in late spring or early fall will stretch your budget even further.

And if you’re looking for recommendations, below are our favorite hotels that prove you don’t need to splurge to enjoy the island.

Akropolis Studios

Akropolis Studios is a 3-star aparthotel in the village of Rodakino, on the south coast of Crete, and it’s a great pick if you’re traveling on a budget. It has a private beach area, a sun terrace and a lush garden, and the balconies and views are what guests tend to praise most. The beach is no further than a short stroll: Klimata Beach is less than 0.6 miles (1 km) away.

The studios are practical and comfortable, with free WiFi, daily housekeeping, and a coffee machine, microwave and washing machine for longer stays. There are also a picnic area, a children’s playground, room service, and bike and car rental. Free private parking is available on site.

Rodakino is a quiet base for exploring the south coast. Plakias is 6.2 miles (10 km) away, and the Fortress of Frangokastello is 8.7 miles (14 km) away. Chania International Airport is 56 miles (90 km) away, so renting a car makes the most sense.

Bay View Platanakis

Located in the village of Zakros in eastern Crete, Bay View Platanakis is a budget-friendly option if you’re looking for a quiet stay surrounded by nature. The property sits on a 20,000-square-meter farm and features a garden and a sun terrace. The air-conditioned rooms come with balconies overlooking the sea, a TV, and a refrigerator, while private bathrooms include a shower and free toiletries.

Kato Zakros Beach is about 2.5 miles away, as is Zakros Gorge, making this a good base for exploring the area’s natural attractions. Free on-site parking is available, but keep in mind that Heraklion International Airport is approximately 93 miles away.

Evilion Hotel

Located in Stalos, Evilion Hotel is just 50 yards from the sandy beach. The property has a swimming pool, a restaurant, and a poolside bar serving drinks and light meals. All air-conditioned studios and apartments come with a kitchen or kitchenette, a dining area, a sitting area with satellite TV, free WiFi, and a balcony overlooking the Cretan Sea or the terrace.

The restaurant serves breakfast with both hot and cold dishes, as well as Cretan specialties for lunch and dinner. Families will appreciate the children’s playground and shallow pool, while there’s also a small library stocked with books and magazines. Lively Platanias is about 2 miles away, and Chania Town is approximately 4 miles away. One parking spot is included in the rate.

Niriis Hotel

Niriis is a small, family-run category C hotel, built in 1996 and renovated in 2002. It has 25 rooms, all of them self-catering studios, and sits about 2.5 miles (4 km) west of Chania, a short walk from Agii Apostoli beach (roughly 330 feet, or 100 m). It’s a good fit for travelers on a budget who want a quiet, comfortable base with a few extra conveniences.

Each studio has a fully equipped kitchenette, a fridge, a seating area, two beds, a private bathroom with a shower, air conditioning, a TV, a phone and a safe. Free WiFi and parking are included. The hotel doesn’t have its own bar or restaurant, but you won’t go hungry: restaurants, shops and public transportation are all within about 100 yards, and three beaches are within walking distance.

The hotel is open from April to October, with a minimum stay of 3 nights. In June 2027, prices start at €220 for a studio for 2 adults, which works out to a little over €73 per night.

Esperides Hotel

Esperides Hotel is a budget-friendly stay in Myrtos, on the south coast of Crete, set in a peaceful spot surrounded by flower gardens. The beach is only about 650 feet (200 m) away and the hotel has a pool, two bars and a traditional Cretan tavern, with plenty of other tavernas in the area.

The rooms are bright and air-conditioned, with a TV, WiFi and a balcony looking out over either the sea or the mountains. The hotel is open year-round, which makes it a good option outside the summer months too.

If you’d like to explore, the town of Ierapetra is about 9 miles (14 km) away, Agios Nikolaos port is 31 miles (50 km), and Heraklion Airport is about 50 miles (80 km) away via the Arkalochori local road. Couples seem to like the setting too, rating the location 8.9 on Booking.com for a two-person trip.

Bali Beach Hotel & Village

Bali Beach Hotel & Village sits right on the beach in the fishing village of Bali, about 28 miles (45 km) from Heraklion. It has 120 rooms, and all of them have a sea view, with a balcony looking out over the bay. There’s plenty to do without going far. The hotel has a bar and a restaurant serving Greek and international dishes and free WiFi throughout.

The location makes it easy to explore Rethymno on foot. The Archaeological Museum is a 16-minute walk away, the Venetian Harbor is about 0.8 miles (1.3 km), and the port and Fortezza Castle are within about a mile. Chania International Airport is 43 miles (69 km) away.

Neratze Hammam Suites is an aparthotel right in the middle of the action in Rethymno town. The Archaeological Museum is only 650 feet (200 m) away, the Venetian Harbor is about 1,640 feet (500 m), and Rethymno Beach is a 17-minute walk. It’s the kind of place where you can spend the day exploring and come back to a proper retreat.

Each unit has a big balcony with city views, a private bathroom, air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchenette and free WiFi, and there’s a hot tub to soak in after a day on your feet. Right in the Old Town of Chania, a few steps from the edge of the Old Harbor, Porto del Colombo is housed in a lovingly restored Venetian building. The hotel has a long history, and with only 10 rooms it feels more like a private guesthouse than a hotel. Rooms have TV, air conditioning, heating, a private bathroom and a minibar.

The location is hard to beat. You’re in the heart of the Old Town, within walking distance of the new town, the main shopping streets and the central bus station, and there’s a taxi rank about 1,640 feet (500 m) away. Chania International Airport is 11 miles (18 km) away.
