Zakynthos (Zante)

zakynthos-townZakynthos is the third largest of the Ionian Islands and a very popular island among tourists. Beautiful beaches, lovely places to visit and a relaxed atmosphere, make Zante a great choice for your summer vacation.

How to get to Zakynthos

Being an island, Zante is served by ferries from mainland Greece and other Greek islands. The ferries to Kefalonia depart from Agios Nikolaos, while the ferries to Kilini (Kyllini, mainland Greece) depart from Zakynthos Town.

Zakynthos is served by an airport, located close to the resorts of Laganas and Kalamaki. It receives both domestic and international flights. You can fly from Athens on Olympic Air for fares which start at €78 per person, one way (during the high season). A variety of low-cost carriers also offer flights to Zakynthos during the summer season.

Weather

Zante is blessed with a typical Mediterranean weather, with hot summer and mild winters. It is known to be the sunniest place in Greece. In August, temperatures can easily sore to 32C and the humidity is rather high. To avoid the high temperatures, plan to visit the island in May, June, September or October.

What to do

Due to the rainfall in winter, Zante is a very lush island, known as the “Flower of the Levant”. March to May, although not a high season period, is a very beautiful period to visit the island, as the flowers are in bloom and everything is very green.

The island has been affected by earthquakes during the years. But the main town has been rebuilt and still keeps it resemblance to Venice’s San Marco square.

The Blue Caves are definitely worth your time. Located on the northern part of the island, these caves are known for the azure waters (particularly during morning). Tour operators offered guided tours of these unique formations and caves.

The Navagio shipwreck was washed ashore after losing engine power (in 1981) and is now a very well known tourist sight. Located in a super bay, it offers excellent opportunity for creative photography. The best photos can be taken from the viewing platform located close to the Agios Gergio Kremnao monastery.

For some beautiful views of the sea, head to Cape Skinari, in the northern part of the island.

Beaches

Zante is blessed with beautiful beaches. Agios Nikolaos beach is known as the best beach on the island. There’s a beach bar and you can enjoy a lot of watersports.

Xehoriati Beach is more peaceful and offers super views of Kefalonia and the mainland. There are two restaurants on the beach.
