June in Greece

June marks the first summer month in Greece. Foreign travelers and locals alike start coming to the islands, all hotels and restaurants are opened, flights and ferries have a regular schedule and the festivals never end.

Weather in Greece in June

On the mainland it’s hot, even too hot at times. On the islands – and coastline – it’s hot but the air is cooled by breezes. Due to the meltemi winds , the ferries might get a bit delayed at times.

Each year, temperatures reach new high records all over the world, and Greece is not spared. You should consider this when you plan your trip and avoid July and August- when the temperatures are high anyway- and choose a cooler month –like May or June. Take into account that winter months start to get warmer and warmer.

During the month of June, the average temperature in Athens is 28 C/ 83 F, while in Rhodes you can expect 27 C/81 F.

Prices and other facilities in Greece in June

Everything is opened: restaurants, cafes, bars, tavernas, hotels…The prices start to feel like “high season” hence they are quite on the expensive side, although with some luck you might find some bargains at the beginning of the month.

Most of the resorts open their water parks and offer a lot of activities aimed at children. It’s the perfect month to plan a family vacation.

Getting to Greece in June

Ferries within Greece and from the neighboring country, as well as flights to Greece and within the country have already resumed their regular schedule. However, due to the meltemi winds, sometimes there might be delays in the ferries’ schedule.

It’s a good idea not to wait until the last minute to book your flight to Greece. As for the ferries, it’s advisable to book ahead of them as well (although on booking sites you can only book two months in advance).

All hotels on the islands are open by now and you should consider booking in advance. Prices have a tendency to go up, but you might be able to find some good bargains.

What to do in Greece in June

The summer months are filled with festivals and most of them start in June. If you plan your trip around such a festival, make sure to ask locally before booking your flight and hotel, because the festival dates might change due to different factors.

June 5 marks International Environment Day, when the admission is free at some museums and archeological sites throughout the country. Whereas European Music Day, celebrated on June 21, is when dozens of cities celebrate with classical music as well as other genres.

From April to October, the Acropolis (Athens) is home to the Sound and Light Show. June marks the start of the Athens Festival, which ends in September.

The last week of June is dedicated to the Navy. The Navy Week is celebrated in most Greek harbors.
