June marks the first summer month in Greece. The tourists start coming to the islands, all hotels and restaurants are opened, flights and ferries have a regular schedule and the festivals never end.
Weather
On the mainland it’s hot, even too hot at times. On the islands –and cost line- it’s hot but the air is cooled by breezes. Due to the meltemi, the ferries might get a bit delayed at times.
Last year saw the highest temperatures ever recorded. Unfortunately, that’s not something new since this has been a common theme all over the world. However, you should consider this when you plan your trip and avoid July and August- when the temperatures are high anyway- and choose a cooler month –like May or June. Take into account that winter months start to get warmer and warmer.
For June, the average temperature in Athens is 28 C/ 83 F, while in Rhodes you can expect 27 C/81 F.

Prices and Facilities
Everything is opened: restaurants, cafes, bars, tavernas, hotels…The prices start to feel like “high season” hence they are quite high, although with some luck you might find some bargains at the beginning of the month.
Most of the resorts open their water parks and offer a lot of activities aimed at children. It’s the perfect month to plan a family vacation.
Ferries and flights resume their regular schedule. However, due to the meltemi some times there might be delays in the ferries’ schedule.
Festivals and Events
The summer months are filled with festivals and most of them start in June. If you plan your trip around such a festival, make sure to ask locally before booking your flight and hotel, because the festival dates might change due to different factors.
June 5 marks the International Environment Day, when the admission is free at some museums and archeological sites.
From April to October, the Acropolis (Athens) is home to the Sound and Light Show. June marks the start of the Athens Festival, which ends in September.
In Karpathos, the entire month of June is dedicated to the wine and during the first week of the month there is a local festival held (the start date changes from year to year so ask locally before you go).
The last week of June is dedicated to the Navy. The Navy Week is celebrated in most Greek harbors.
