Free Things to Do in Santorini

Greece is not a very expensive destination but some islands tend to be less affordable than others. In general, the more popular a destination is, the more it would cost to stay there and eat out. When it comes to things to do in Santorini , there are some interesting things which are free to experience.

Watch the sunset from Amoudi Bay

In Oia, descend the 300 steps to the tiny Amoudi Bay. You will be rewarded with beautiful views of the volcano. There are several taverns which serve the catch of the day and you can try authentic Greek food here. It’s one of the best places to watch the sunset in Santorini.

Walk on the black sand of Kamari Beach

Kamari Beach is located about 6.5 km from Fira. It’s the largest black sand beach in Santorini. It is also the most developed resort area so there are a lot of hotels and restaurants to choose from. But walking on the black sand doesn’t cost a thing.

A quieter walk at Red Beach

Red Beach gets its name from the reddish volcanic sand. It’s much quieter than Kamari Beach. It’s quite hard to get to unless you are willing to do a bit of hiking. Still, walking is free. Plus, you can always pack a picnic basket for a romantic escape.

Explore Emporio

If you feel like doing something interesting, get your walking shoes on and go looking for old cave houses in Emporio. You can also see the ruins of the fortified castle and you can visit Palia Panagia, one of the oldest churches on the island.

Walk from Fira to Firostafani

Put on your walking shoes, dress lightly and take some water. Then take the pathway which begins near the Fira cable car along the cliff to Firostafani.

Walk from Fira to Oia

Take the same walkway and walk to Oia. It would take about 3 hours. Again, take some water with you, dress lightly and wear comfortable shoes. The views are breathtaking so bring your camera as well.
