Beaches for Snorkeling in Greece Recommended by Bloggers

When in Greece… you go snorkeling. Well, that’s unless you are not me.

As much as I love to splash in the crystal-clear water, that’s pretty much where my water adventures have always stopped. This fire sign doesn’t feel like a fish in the water (pun intended).

Setting this embarrassing detail aside, I’ve decided to ask my fellow bloggers about their favorite place to snorkel in Greece.

So, without further ado, if you plan to put on the snorkel and explore Greece’s waters, here’s where you should head to:

Elafonissi Beach, Crete

Elafonissi beach in Crete is one of the prettiest beaches on the island. Located around 1,5 hours by car from Chania, this beach is an ideal spot for a long sunbathing and swimming day. What makes this beach special is the pinkish color of the sand. This beach is also Natura 2000 protected area.

Clear, shallow water and occasional rocks make it perfect for snorkeling. The beach is home to endangered loggerhead sea turtle and several more animals. Thanks to shallow waters, the sea temperature is nice and warm throughout the summer and even offseason.

I would recommend avoiding the touristy area on the eastern side of the beach and look for a quiet place with more rocks – that’s where most wildlife can be found usually.

The beach has good parking, so coming here by rental car is the best and easiest option. Just make sure to bring an umbrella (or hat), enough sunscreen, sturdy shoes against sea urchins and lots of drinking water.

Loutro Beach, Crete

My husband and I spent part of our honeymoon in the remote (and truly lovely) village of Loutro in Crete. You can only access this area by boat, so there are no cars (or roads) in the village. This makes it a quiet and relaxing area to walk, swim and snorkel.

You can walk along the cliffs to visit various beaches. We loved Glyka Nera beach as it has clear spring water coming from the sand, and Marmara beach, which has plenty of caves to swim in to and explore.

However, we had the most fun snorkeling at Loutro beach, right by the village. While we were there, we even got to snorkel with a giant turtle, who came right up to sniff our toes! The waters are crystal clear so I promise you will have a great time snorkeling and swimming here!

If you prefer to go diving, there is a company in the next village over (Chora Sfakion) that offers diving experiences.

Porto Vromi, Zakynthos

Zakynthos is known for its blue waters and amazing landscapes. On the east side of the island, you can find nice beaches with gold sand, perfect for families with children. The western side has other surprises.

Those in search of the best places for snorkeling and diving can find them here, hidden among the cliffs that form the western shore of Zakynthos. One of them is Porto Vromi.

Accessible by car (on a narrow, steep road), Porto Vromi is a bay with crystal clear waters, emerald green tones and big rocks where different fish hide. It has Anafonitria beach on one side (sand and pebble beach, with fishermen boats) and Maries beach (more popular than the other one because is the departing place for private trips to the Shipwreck).

Anafonitria beach is small and half of it is shadowed by the mountain behind it. The color of the water and the big rocks will offer you a great view of the underwater mysteries. It will make you come back here.

And Porto Vromi is just one of the many places in Zakynthos where you can have a snorkeling experience to remember!
