April in Greece

April marks the start of spring in Greece. The wildflowers are in bloom and the drier islands, such as Crete, are now covered with a blanket of green vegetation.

The water may not be warm enough for a dip, but the beaches are just lovely to explore. And of course, plan for plenty of sightseeing.

The warmer days are starting to become quite common, although on the mainland it’s still a bit cold. But it’s the perfect weather for exploring the sights. If you’ve always wanted to visit Athens, April is a lovely time for a visit.

On the islands and the coastal region, the weather is quite pleasant and there will be a lot of warm days. You may not be able to swim yet (unless you like cold water), but you can certainly enjoy some time on the beach just taking in the sights and beauty.

The average temperature in Athens is 59 F /15 C, while in Rhodes is 60 F/16 C.

Prices and other facilities in Greece in April

By the end of the month, there will be quite a lot of hotels and restaurants opened on the islands, but the flights and ferries are still not very common. Around Easter, the ferry frequency will increase slightly, though. Do make sure to book the tickets in advance. The prices are still low but may increase around Easter.

Getting to Greece in April

Athens, Thessaloniki, as well as big island are served by flights directly from international destinations.

To reach smaller islands, you’d need to fly into either Athens or Thessaloniki and then take a domestic flight or a ferry .

Accommodation is plentiful even on the islands. Since Easter usually falls in April, the tourists start coming to Greece. That means you need to book in advance and expect higher than during the low season, although not as high as during July and August.

What to do in Greece in April

April 19 marks Easter on the Orthodox Calendar in 2020. However, do note that Easter is a movable holiday (so each year it falls on a different Sunday, but most often it’s during the month of April).

By far, Easter is the most memorable holiday you can spend in Greece. The most sacred day of the week is Good Friday, a fast day when women avoid any chore. Easter Saturday is the day when all preparations for the festive dinner begin. At about 11 PM on Saturday, the churches and streets start to be filled with people attending the midnight mass. Easter Sunday is a day spent with the family, marked by eating traditional Greek Easter food, such as grilled lamb.

The island of Corfu is a great choice if you visit Greece in spring. The Holy Week events are plentiful and intriguing. Also, don’t forget to check out the museums and stroll on the stunning beaches.

One of the Dodecanese islands, Patmos has a strong connection to the Bible. It is home to the Cave of the Apocalypse, where it is said that St. John had a vision and wrote the book of Revelation.

If you aren’t into the religious side of the island, make sure to check out the charming villages and spend some time on the stunning beaches. You may even get some tan!

Easily reachable both from Athens and Thessaloniki, Meteora is a great destination if you want to experience Easter in Greece. Although, do note that it might be quite a popular choice for plenty of other Christians.
