Crete: Ikarus Rock Festival

A new free music festival is going to rock the island of Crete this August. Combine the crowds of youngsters with the beautiful scenery of Crete and the music and you’ve got the best reason ever to spend your vacation in Crete this summer.

When?

Sunday, August 10, 2008; begins at 4 PM

Where?

Avdou, Crete

To get to the festival’s site follow the road to Lasithi, the only road off the highway. Take the exit for Chersonissos/Kastelli/Lasithi and follow the signs to Kastelli/Lasitihi about 9 km inland. Pass the golf course, the waterpark and the right turn to Kasteli and continue to follow the road to Lasithi. The festival site is about 10 min from the entrance to Avdou. Don’t drive in the center as the streets are narrow and crowded. There is a free parking lot offered by the organizers but it might be too crowded. There is plenty of free parking available in the city though.

The closest airport is Heraklion International Airport (HER), at about 30 min drive from Avdou.

If you prefer to take the ferry, there are connections four times a day to Athens (Piraeus) and daily connections to the Cyclades (Santorini, Ios and Mykonos).

What’s happening?

The festival is the idea of Tasos, lead singer of Black Ocean.

At this point, the festival’s line up includes: Fastlane Roogalator, Angwish and Black Ocean. Over fifteen acts from UK, USA, Greece and other countries are scheduled to play for the fans so it is going to be a very long night.

The intention of the organizers is to mix the traditional Cretan hospitality and culture with the modern rock music in such a way to keep attracting crowds from all over the world.

Ikarus is the biggest festival after Athens’s RockWave, but unlike the festival in the capital, Ikarus is free for the public.

The festival site is easily accessible from the major Cretan towns, such as Heraklion, Chersonissos, Malia or Aghios Nikoloas.

Note:

Volunteers are needed for the festival so if you want to volunteer, you can find more information on the Festival’s official web site.
