Ferries in Greece are the primary means of transport between the islands and from the mainland to the islands. The ferry trip to some islands is over-night, so you’ll be in a floating hotel. Generally speaking, traveling by ferry is also scenic, especially when you plan to visit islands such as Santorini.
The cheapest way to travel is on deck, which nowadays goes by the name of “economy” (you don’t literally be “on the back” as there are lounges where you can hang out). Air plane type of seats and cabins are also available.
When should I book the ferry ticket?
Generally speaking, you don’t need to book in advance unless you travel on the following days:
- Thursday and Friday before Easter
- the Friday of Agios Pnevmatos (40 days after Easter)
- last weekend of July (from Thursday on ) and the first week of August
- Thursday and Friday before August 15
- last week of August
Why? Because these are days connected to important religious holidays, when the locals get time off and head to the islands or to holy places.
So, simply put, should you plan to travel around Easter or during the peak travel season – July and August – make sure to book the ferry tickets in advance. But be prepared for crowds as everyone seems to want to get out of the cities at the same time.
Can I book the ticket online when I make the other travel arrangements?
You certainly can. However, booking online is limited to about 2 months before departure. So if you book your flight or hotel 3 month before your vacation, you might not be able to book the ferry ticket at the same time. Also, please remember that certain routes are not available during the winter months or offer only a limited number of departures.
Can I get the ticket directly in the port?
Of course you can, unless you travel on those days mentioned above. Get to the port about 1 ½ h to 1 h before the departure and buy the ticket.
