Two earthquakes hit southern Greece on Thursday, February 14, 2008. One of them was felt as far as Italy and Egypt. Thankfully no injuries were reported.
The first earthquake hit just after noon and the Athens Geodynamic Institute estimated a magnitude of 6.5. It was felt as far as Cairo (Egypt) and southern Italy. The second hit about two hours later and registered a magnitude of 6.4. Both had the epicenter about 140 miles / 200 km south west of Athens. Only minor damages –such as cracks in the walls – have been reported.
Earthquakes are quite common in Greece. In January, a 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck in another part of southern Greece and did not cause injuries or damage.
