The ruined fortress in Oia is an excellent spot to watch the sunset from. You’ll have to come early and look for a secluded spot because this location is famous among all travelers and it is very crowded year round.

It is a Minoan Bronze Age settlement, which was destroyed by the volcanic eruption. What’s left of the town (as it was the day the locals flee) can be explored now. The site has been closed for years but rumors are it will reopen soon. Ask locally.

This is located on the east side of the island and has no facilities, no tavernas and no place to shop. In other words, pack your walking shoes, pack a picnic basket and enjoy the silence.
