Top 10 Things to Do in Athens

Trying to write a list of the things to do in Athens will definitely take a long time and soon enough you’ll be faced with a lot of sights to see and not enough time to do everything you want. That’s why, we’ve put together a list of the top attractions in Athens , sights which should be on your must-see list for your vacation.

1. Spend a day visiting the Acropolis of Athens


The Acropolis of Athens is the most important archeological site in the capital. Plan to get here early especially if you visit the site in the summer. There are many important buildings to visit, so take your time. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water with you.

In a clear day, the views from the hill are amazing: you can see the port of Piraeus and the entire capital. Do plan here to stay for the sunset as well.

2. Visit the New Acropolis Museum


The New Acropolis Museum will complete the exploration of the ancient site. Aside from offering panoramic views of the Acropolis, the museum houses interesting exhibitions, such as replicas and items found in the ancient buildings.

3. Spend a day visiting the National Archeological Museum


The National Archeological Museum is one of the greatest museums in the world. It is also the largest in Greece , housing around 20,000 exhibits.

4. See Athens from a different perspective – Lycabettus Hill


Everyone knows the Acropolis but few know the other hills. Lycabettus Hill is excellent if you look for a way to escape the hustle and bustle of the town, yet not leave it. There is a funicular which takes travelers on the hill. Board it in Kolonaki. It runs daily from 9 a.m. until almost midnight.

5. Shop for bargains at the Monastiraki Flea Market


Every Sunday, the market is teaming with life. Most of the market is a collection of small shops mean to satisfy the travelers’ needs. But you’ll also find things specific to the flea market. There are also cafes and restaurants where you can sit down for a quick meal.

6. Walk in Athens at night


The tourist shops are opened until late at night and so are the cafes and tavernas. Use commons sense when deciding where to go. Statistically, Athens is safer than London or Paris.

7. View the sunset at Cape Sounion


This is a favorite sunset viewing point for both locals and tourists. There are buses connecting Athens to Cape Sounion but you could consider renting a car and driving.

8. Enjoy Greek food in a hidden taverna


Do a bit of research and find a place which is hidden from the main tourist areas. That’s where the Greek food is at its best. And that’s where you’ll find the locals, as well.

9. Enjoy the nature in the National Garden


In the middle of Athens, there’s a green refuse. If the hustle and bustle of the city is overwhelming, come here to visit the Zoo and enjoy the time in nature. Enjoy the birds residing here and even get something to drink in one of the hidden cafes.

10. Watch the changing of the guards in front of the Parliament

Looking for a free thing to feel your morning? Then watch the changing of the guards in front of the Parliament. You’ll see the traditional uniforms and be delighted by the special “walk” when the changing of the guards happens.
