Things to Do in Rhodes

Rhodes , also known as they “sun island” is one of the most popular vacation destinations in Greece. It is located just 18 km from the coast of Turkey and offers tourists the possibility to explore the nature, visit historical sites and sample the excellent Greek food and wines.

Although it’s not the most romantic Greek island, Rhodes is an island favored by honeymooners. The perfect Mediterranean climate makes it an excellent vacation destination for those who seek sun and sand.

Some of the most interesting and fun things to do in Rhodes include:

Spend a day exploring the Old Town

The Old Town of Rhodes is the oldest inhabited medieval fortress in the world. The site has been very well preserved and it’s a pleasure to discover the small streets and incredible buildings. The most interesting part of the Old Town is the Street of Knights, a medieval road which stretches from the Archaeological Museum to the Grandmaster’s Palace.

Visit the Aquarium

The goal of the Aquarium is to present and preserve the species of the Mediterranean Sea. It comprises 13 large tanks and 15 smaller ones. There’s also a museum on site which displays embalmed sea species, like dolphins, sea turtles and sharks.

The ancient city of Lindos was a major maritime power. Today, the traditional Greek village offers narrow streets, Byzantine churches, the Acropolis of Lindos and an ancient necropolis, which can be visited. Aside from visiting the historical site, you can also spend time on the beach.

A day at the Water park

Faliraki Waterpark is the largest water park in Europe. It is open between May and October. There are many attractions and rides available for kids of all ages.

Rhodes has a lot of beaches and there’s definitely something for each traveler. Prassonissi Beach, located in the south part of the island, is a heaven for surfers. Faliraki Beach is the most developed beach on the island and is located close (14 km) to the capital city. Golfers will love Afandou beach and the golf course located close by.

Visit the Ancient City of Kamiros

It is located on the less crowded west coast of Rhodes. The views of the Aegean Sea are absolutely magnificent. The city was destroyed by an earthquake. The excavations stared in 1859 and now it’s possible to visit the ruins of the Temple of Athena, the ancient baths, the Agora, as well as other ancient buildings.

Visit the Monastery of Filerimos

The monastery is located on a hill above Ialyssos, about 10 km from Rhodes Town. It is is dedicated to Virgin Mary. Its architecture is different than the usual monasteries in Greece as it is built in Gothic style. Around the monastery, there are the remains of the old baptistery, an underground church of Saint George, as well as the remains of Ancient Ialysos.
