Sunday at around 3:25 PM local time (12:25 PM GMT) a strong earthquake struck southwestern Greece, near the city port of Patras, about 120 miles/ 200 km from Athens. The quake killed at least two, injured 120 and practically leveled dozen of houses. The government said it would give €3,000 (over $4,600) as aid to anyone who had lost their home.
It’s Greece’s first fatal earthquake since 1999. Sunday’s quake had an estimated preliminary magnitude of 6.5.
The Greek tourist board said no damage has been report in the tourist areas, hotels and no tourists have been hurt.
Greece is located in a very active area quake wise but, thankfully, most quakes cause no injuries.
