Santorini, a place forever in the hearts of travelers and in the minds of photographers. Although it is a seemingly perfect island escape in Greece, the island can get crowded and chaotic during peak seasons. Perhaps this is why I wonder off the beaten path so much. I would awake at 5am to wonder the empty streets. The sunrise on the Caldara is soft and peaceful, emitting hues of light pink and dusty orange. Or perhaps, I would be tempted to wonder off and find hidden paths, like this trail that led to a secluded church. It was locked and seemingly abandoned, but it was safely nestled into the rugged and barren cliffs. I was the only one here, save for my travel partner, and we just sat and enjoyed gazing at the sky through the iconic blue and white architecture.
I encourage you to do the same in Santorini, get off the beaten path and explore the true gems that make this island so beautiful. Don’t just snap your Instagram photo and leave, but breath and live the island life.
Santorini is part of the Cyclades islands of Greece in the Aegean Sea. It’s enjoyed a boost in tourism since Instagram made it famous, so it can get quite crowded. I recommend traveling on a shoulder season to enjoy its full potential. This photo was taken on side trail during the walk from Fira to Oia.
