I took this photo in Athens in May 2017. During my trip, I discovered a nice taverna close to where we had rented a place. And did I order on my first evening in Athens? Spanakopita and Horiatiki (the classic Greek salad).
The traditional Greek spinach pie is typically made with chopped spinach, feta cheese, onions or scallions, egg, and seasoning. In rural Greece, smaller amounts of spinach are used, with the missing part substituted with leeks, chard and sorrel.
As for the Greek salad, everyone knows what it is comprised of, right? Tomatoes, cucumbers, green bell pepper, red onion, olive oil, kalamata olives, and feta on top. By the way, you will also find that the feta is often replaced by a local cheese when you travel in various parts of the country.
