July in Greece

July is one of the busiest and most crowded months in Greece.

Since most Europeans take their vacations in July (or August) and the kids are out of school in the whole of the Northern Hemisphere, it seems that everyone wants to visit the country now.

There is an abundance of things to do in the middle of summer in Greece. You can “hop” between the islands very easily since the ferries and flights are very often, you can relax on the beach or practice water sports, you can visit the archeological sites or enjoy the festivals.

Whether in Greece in July

On the mainland the weather is hot, sometimes very hot. On the islands and on the coastal regions, the hot weather is cooled by the meltemi.

The average temperature in Athens is 31 C / 88 F, while in Rhodes it’s up to 29.4 C / 85 F.

Kindly take note that, with each passing year, the average temperature is increasing across the globe and Greece makes no exception. July is a hot month anyway, but things may get even hotter so make sure to be prepared and know how to stay safe during the summer heat.

Prices and other facilities in Greece in July

Everything is opened on the mainland and on the islands: hotels, hostels, restaurants, cafes, tavernas.

The flights and ferries are frequent but crowded all the time.

July is not a good month to just “drop in” Greece: you have to book everything in advance ( the flight, the accommodation, and the ferry ticket) if you want a carefree holiday.

The water parks are also opened.

Do note that since July is peak season in Greece, the prices are at their highest.

Getting to Greece in July

One thing is for sure: there are plenty of flights into Greece, whether regular commercial or charter routes.

The same goes for ferries: there are plenty of sailings available, but the vessels book up quickly and they tend to be crowded.

Since you’d be traveling during the high season, expect high prices and lots of people.

Where to stay in Greece in July

There is no shortage of accommodation available to book in Greece in July. Hotels, b&b’s, guesthouses, camping sites, and plenty other places are open throughout the islands and mainland. But, just like stated above, expect the prices to be high and the place to be booked well in advance.

What to do in Greece in July

Sailing is probably the best way to explore the Greek islands without having to withstand the hot temperatures all the time. Get some friends together and rent a boat to discover the magical islands at your own pace.

If you like to explore the islands and don’t feel like hiking, you can rent a scooter or a bike. They can be found at any car rental shop.

Fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling and water skiing might also appeal to you and offer a nice break from staying on the beach the entire day. A lot of resorts offer tennis courts and you can also play beach volleyball.

The nightlife is at its best. Don’t miss a night in the well-known clubs in Mykonos. Of course, you will find great clubs and cafes on every Greek island.
