July in GreeceJuly is one of the busiest and most crowded months in Greece. Everyone seems to want to visit the country now. You can “hop” between the islands very easily since the ferries and flights are very often, you can relax on the beach or practice water sports, you can visit the archeological sites or enjoy the festivals.

Weather

On the mainland the weather is hot, sometimes very hot. On the islands and on the coastal regions, the hot weather is cooled by the meltemi.

The average temperature in Athens is 31 C / 88 F, while in Rhodes it’s up to 29.4 C / 85 F.

Do take into account that he highest ever temperatures in Greece have been recorded in 2007. So July –which is a hot month anyway- might get even hotter than the average temperatures listed on the websites.

Facilities

Everything is opened on the mainland and on the islands: hotels, hostels, restaurants, cafes, tavernas. The flights and ferries are frequent but crowded all the time. It’s not a good idea to just “drop in” Greece: you have to book a flight, hotel and ferry if you want a carefree holiday. The water parks are also opened. The prices are very high.

Getting to Greece in July

One thing is for sure: there are plenty of flights into Greece, whether regular ones or charter ones. July marks the height of the season, so expect the prices to be high and the flights crowded. The same is valid for ferries as well.

Where to stay

Every single accommodation place in Greece is open and usually fully booked although prices are very high. Make sure to book in advance if you plan to vacation here in July.

What to do

Sailing is probably the best way to explore the Greek islands without having to withstand the hot temperatures all the time.

If you like to explore the islands and don’t feel like hiking, you can rent a scooter or a bike. They can be found at any car rental shop.

Fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling and water skiing might also appeal to you and offer a nice break from staying on the beach the entire day. A lot of resorts offer tennis courts and you can also play beach volleyball.

The nightlife is at its best. Don’t miss a night in the well-known clubs in Mykonos. Of course, you will find great clubs and cafes on every Greek island.

Festivals

If you happen to be a rock & metal fan, you must not miss Rockwave Festival near Athens. Usually it takes place during the first weekend of July. The exact date hasn’t yet been confirmed for 2008.

As an alternative you can enjoy ancient dramas being played during the Hellenic Festival, which takes place at the ancient theatre Epidaurus.

If you happen to visit Crete, don’t miss going to the city of Rethymnon and enjoy the Renaissance Festival. All the events take place at the theatre “Erofili” located in the Venetian fortress.

If you like Cricket (the game, not the bug), you can go to Corfu during the Cricket Week.
