Hotels in Santorini

by Cristina

Santorini hotelOne of the most sought after Greek island, Santorini, is filled with a wide range of hotels catering for any traveler. No matter where you decide to stay on the island, in each village you will find quality hotels offering the best view of the sea or caldera.

Best Locations in Santorini

In general, choosing the location depends on what you plan to do while visiting Santorini. If you are interested in the night life and shopping center you might want to stay in the center of the island. Rooms in such villages – Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia – tend to be more expensive but offer the best view of the caldera and volcano.

If you plan a vacation at the beach you should consider choosing a hotel located in the northeastern or southeastern part of the island.

Please remember: higher prices in certain village don’t actually mean additional facilities or comfort. Sometimes you are better off booking a hotel in the southeastern part of the island and plan several day trips to visit the villages located on the caldera.

Worth Trying

Theoxenia Hotel

It is located in Fira, offering the best view of the sea and the Volcano. The Hotel is opened all year round but offers a limited number of rooms (9). It’s the perfect location if you plan to spend your honeymoon in Santorini. The guests are welcomed with a taste of the homemade figs and the sweet Visanto wine, while the breakfast is served in bed (and included in the price of the room). TV, direct dial telephone and internet connection (not Wi-Fi) are also available in every room. Rates are a bit on the pricy side. The price for a single room during the 2010 high season starts at €78/night.

Amaryllis Hotel

It is located very close to Perrisa. The hotel offers 28 rooms (and 49 beds) all equipped with TV, fridge and telephone. During the 2010 high season, the price a single room starts at €62/person during the high season (Jul 1-Sept 15).

Artemis Village

It is an A Class hotel located at the end of Karterados, just 5 minutes from down-town Fira and at 100 m / 328 ft from the beach. The hotel is opened from April to October and offers 20 rooms and a swimming pool. All rooms have TV, AC and telephone. Free transport is offered to down-town Fira, airport and harbor. During the 2010, the prices for a double room start at €75/room/night during the high season (Jul 20-Aug 25).

Tips

Most of the hotels on the island are opened from April to October, but you might find some which open in March. Some hotels close the season in November. There are some hotels which are opened all year round.

Book well in advance if you don’t use a travel agency. Travel agencies generally buy the rooms “in bulk” hence offering lower prices than those found online. But another big problem is that those rooms booked by travel agencies aren’t available on the online booking systems. Also, don’t forget to take into account several factors when choosing your hotel –such as price per room, facilities – since in Greece the categories aren’t exactly “standard”.
