A weekend in Athens

Acropolis AthensIt shouldn’t come as a surprise that the writer of Greece Travel Guide is planning a vacation in…Greece. And what do we do when we plan our vacations? Research!

Athens is the birth place of civilization and one of those cities which should be visited at least once in a lifetime. With that in mind, I set out to create an itinerary for a weekend in Athens.

And my research took me to a rather interesting article: The New York Time’s 36 Hours in Athens, Greece . Poking my nose in other fellow writers’ article is not only fun (I have to check out the competition, right?) but also very informative.

Shop till You Drop!

Ermou Street AthensLooking for something special but can’t afford it? Don’t be that sure because sales start in full force on January 15. So head to the nearest airport and book a flight to Greece; Athens to be exact. You won’t regret it. You can literally change your entire wardrobe and end up saving money if you manage to catch the sales.

Sales Period

All over Europe, the sales period starts in mid-January. In Greece, according to law 3357/2007 the sales will last from January 15 to February 28. Unlike in some other European countries, in Greece sales are forbidden before January 15. You can also shop at low prices in August and September.

Shopping in Mykonos

The best way to fill some time is shopping. Whether you visit New York, Vienna, London or Mykonos, the best part of enjoying the culture is checking out the stores and especially the discounts. If you happen to come to Mykonos in August you’ll be pleasantly surprised to realize that you can go back home with quite a big new wardrobe for the fraction of the price you’d pay otherwise. As the discounts season draws to an end you can even find merchandise discounted up to 70%!

Opening hours

Contrary to what you probably know from big capitals where the stores close their doors at 5 or 6 pm, in Mykonos you’ll find the stores open until late at night (around 10 pm) and even until morning (1 or 2 am) during July and August. This means you don’t have to sacrifice beach time. Plus, the “afternoon siesta” is pretty much not heard of in Mykonos so don’t worry about finding the stores closed in the afternoon either.

One Euro Store

Store in AthensWith the exchange rate acting like this, the One Euro Stores in Greece might just by exactly what you need in case you forgot something at home or was seized at airport security.

I know… most of the posh travelers would avoid these stores at all costs. Before you decide to call me nuts, let me assure you that there is nothing wrong with buying items from the One Euro Stores, the European Union version of the “99 cent store”. Seriously! You will find them in any major Greek city and in some remote locations as well.
