Getting married in Greece

Wedding bands Planning to get married this year? Then why not do that in Greece. Destination weddings are pretty much anything a future-to-be bride wants provided she likes to travel. The romantic Greek islands represent the perfect place to have your dream wedding and then spend your dream honeymoon.

The easiest way to handle a destination wedding is, of course, to hire a wedding organizer. While technically you can do all the arrangements yourself, unless you have a lot of free time and speak Greek, you should consider at least hiring someone to deal with the documents in Greece. Make sure the company (person) is based in Greece and they have the proper connections.

Crete: Ikarus Rock Festival

A new free music festival is going to rock the island of Crete this August. Combine the crowds of youngsters with the beautiful scenery of Crete and the music and you’ve got the best reason ever to spend your vacation in Crete this summer.

When?

Sunday, August 10, 2008; begins at 4 PM

Where?

Avdou, Crete

To get to the festival’s site follow the road to Lasithi, the only road off the highway. Take the exit for Chersonissos/Kastelli/Lasithi and follow the signs to Kastelli/Lasitihi about 9 km inland. Pass the golf course, the waterpark and the right turn to Kasteli and continue to follow the road to Lasithi. The festival site is about 10 min from the entrance to Avdou. Don’t drive in the center as the streets are narrow and crowded. There is a free parking lot offered by the organizers but it might be too crowded. There is plenty of free parking available in the city though.

Greek Orthodox Good Friday

Good Friday epitaphMillions of Orthodox Christians commemorate Good Friday on April 25, 2008.

Good Friday (or Great Friday) is a day of mourning. The icon of Christ is taken off the cross, wrapped in linen and put in the Epitafios, which symbolizes the tomb of Christ. Late at night the Epitafios is carried through the town is a solemn procession which symbolizes the burial of Christ.

Why is there a date difference between Catholic and Orthodox Easter?

The Gregorian calendar was introduced in Europe in 1582 but many Christians retained the Julian calendar, therefore the Easter date is different from the one in the west (Catholic and other Christian churches). Easter holidays are “movable feasts” which means they change every year according to calendar calculations.

Galaxidi: Clean Monday Flour War

Galaxidi Flour WarClean Monday (March 10th) marks the first day of Orthodox Lent in Greece. Although there’s still an atmosphere of carnival on the streets, only “pure” food is eaten.

Galaxidi, a city located 200 km/124 miles from Athens, is home to an annual flour war. The “war” is a long kept tradition which happens every year on the first day of Lent.

Given the messiness of the war, Clean Monday is not exactly a good word for it though.
