Flights within Greece

by Cristina

Once you get to Greece –either via Athens or Thessaloniki airport, a very easy way to get to Greek islands is by using the domestic flights, either scheduled or charter. Most international flights allow for the necessary time for making the connection with internal flights but make sure to book the domestic flights in advance, mostly during summers.

There are 59 airports in Greece, of which 13 are military airports and only 16 are international airports. However, from these 16 only two –Athens and Thessaloniki- receive regular flights from abroad. During the summer, numerous charter flights depart both major international airports.

Domestic Scheduled Flights from Athens

Most of the international flights arrive on Athens International Airport. Olympic Airlines offers the majority of the domestic flights. Aegean Airlines also offers domestic scheduled flights from Athens.

Olympic Airlines connects Athens with the following Greek cities via the domestic scheduled flights to: Alexandroupolis, Astypalaia Island, Chania, Chios, Heraklion, Ikaria Island, Ioannina, Kalymnos Island, Karpathos, Kastoria, Kavala, Kefallinia, Kerkyra, Kithira, Kos, Leros, Limnos, Mykonos, Milos, Mytilene, Naxos, Paros, Rhodes, Samos, Sitia, Syros Island, Thessaloniki, Thira and Zakinthos, while Aegean Airlines connects Athens with 13 cities of the cities listed above.

The distances between Athens and other cities are rather small so the furthest destination would be about half an hour flight from the capital.

Olympic Airlines connects Thessaloniki with the following Greek cities via the domestic scheduled flights to: Athens, Chania, Heraklion, Kalamata, Kerkyra, Limnos, Mytilene and Rhodes, while Aegean Airlines connects the city with only three of the cities listed above.
