Fires continue to burn in Greece, and more Greece news
Here are some Greece news to read while sipping your morning coffee:
- While the fires on the island of Rhodes have been finally put under control at the beginning of the week (July 28), new fires broke out in Attika , right near the capital. Fires are still burning in several parts of the country and the officials warn that the risk of new fires breaking out is very high mainly on the islands and the south part of the country.
- Athens: new Acropolis museum is spectacular . Construction took more than planned mostly because the new museum sits on top of an archeological site , deemed to be “modest in value”.
- The archeological site of Akrotiri (Santorini) remains closed three years after the protective roof collapsed. The situation annoys not only tourists who cannot visit the site but also those who work in the tourism industry and who are losing money. You can read about Akrotiri here.
- Peloponnese made Guardian’s list of “10 top cycle rides in Europe” Unfortunately, it only made it to number 10, probably because of the dubious quality of the roads.
- A New York Times writer spent a lovely vacation in Crete and tells all about his experiences spending the days in a “peaceful and primitive” cottage.
- Athens, Piraeus: Two cruise ships collided in the port on Monday. Thankfully no one was hurt.
- Bulgarians go to Greece to get their cheaper medications. Apparently the new trend in weekend tourism is to head to Greece for pain killers. Indeed a “healing” holiday!
- Greece has the highest prevalence of obesity in the EU . We cannot but ask what had happened to the healthy cuisine and the sculpted bodies of the ancient Greeks. Experts seem to agree that Greeks are not eating enough fruits and vegetables nowadays.
