Aegina is located very close to Athens and is one of the most popular islands to take a day trip from Athens.

Whether you want to buy pistachio directly from where it’s grown, or want to experience the island life without having to go to Mykonos or Rhodes, Aegina is a great vacation destination close to the capital.

The ferries are the only way to get there, so if you are planning to visit the island during the weekend right in the middle of the high season, make sure to book your ticket couple of days in advance.

Port of Piraeus

The port of Piraeus (or Pireas*) is large and can be a little confusing at first.

All the ferries to Aegina depart from Port Gate Ε8 (the gate always appears printed on your ticket).

What ports are there on Aegina Island?

The main port is located in Aegina Town. Aegina Port is the only one that receives ferries year-round.

Other three ports – Souvala and Agia Marina – only receives ferries from Piraeus during summer; while Perdika does not receive passenger ferries at the moment.

The journey between the port of Piraeus (Athens) and Aegina takes between 40 min and 1 h 20 min.

Is there a high speed ferry between Athens and Aegina?

Yes. The majority of ferries only take 40 min to get to Aegina.

How much does it cost to get from Athens to Aegina by ferry?

The ferry ticket price depends on the company and type of ferry you are taking:

  • On the high speed ferry (40 min) operated by Blue Star Ferries, the single fare starts at €19.
  • On the slow ferry (1 h 10 min) operated by Saronic Ferries, the single fare starts at €12.
  • On the slow ferry (1 h 25 min) operated by San Lorenzo Ferries, the single fare starts at €10.50.

125x125You can book your tickets online. Esepcially when you travel during the high season, make sure to book your ticket ahead of time.

You can also book via a travel agent in your country or directly via a Greek travel agency.

Another good option is to buy your tickets direct from the port (Port Gate Ε1). Unless you plan to travel when everyone else is (weekends during the high season) there isn’t much need to book your tickets in advance.

Does everyone charge the same prices?

According to the web sites the prices you pay via their booking system are the same as the ones in the port. Even if there’s a difference, it’s not significant.

    Just want to inform you your information is wrong in that ferries do run from Athens-Piraeus to Aegina/Angistri after Sept. 7 th. ,try the booking part of Hellenic Seaways and you’ll see flying dolphin services.
