Who said Greece was expensive? At least not for the Eastern Europeans, who are at a stone’s throw away from the beautiful Greek beaches. Transport is quite cheap – being in the EU insures very low prices on some of the flights to Greece – , and finding cheap accommodation is easy.
Greek media reported recently that tourists from Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia are heading to Greece. Last year, Bulgaria was the preferred destination for Romanians, but this season it has been replaced by Greece (and Turkey).
Bulgarians prefer the hotels in the northern part of Greece, with a strong preference for the Chalkidiki Peninsula. The Serbs, who used to spend their vacation in Montenegro, are now heading to Rhodes, Crete, Corfu and the same Chalkidiki Peninsula. The Romanians always had a preference for Greece but that’s becoming even stronger now (since they afford to give tips). The Czechs, Hungarians, Poles and Slovaks also tend to prefer to spend their vacation in Greece.
Why would this be? Simple: Greece is still less expensive than the majority of other countries in Europe. Although August is the most expensive month, a lot of travel agencies offer rooms in hotels at lower prices than the “rack price” only because they “rent” them in bulk at the beginning of the season.
