Athens Zoo

Athens ZooI know I’m still a kid although my age won’t exactly confirm that. Every single time we visit a new big city we have to see the Zoo (provided there’s something interesting to see there, of course).

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Athens Zoo (or by its official name Attica Zoological Park) caught our eyes. Athens Zoo is privately owned and is located near the Spata airport.

History

A relatively new Zoo (opened since 2000), it’s home to the 3rd largest bird collection in the world. In April 2001, the “World of Reptiles” section was opened and in 2002 the “Greek Fauna” section was revealed to the public. The “African Savannah” section was opened in 2003 and hosts the unique White Tigers among other big cats. Other sections followed and now the Zoo offers the visitors (and especially the children – at age or heart) a perfect place to spend a lovely day.

Animals

The animals currently residing the Zoo include: African Penguin, American alligator, Baringo giraffe, Black capped capuchin, Eurasian lynx, European brown bear, Grant’s zebra, Greater flamingoes, Jaguar, Ostrich, Otter, Red fox, Ring tailed lemur, Serval, Tiger, Wallaby, White lion, snakes, monkeys, parrots and some local fauna.

The Zoo received some new “residents” later including a pair of Pumas, five Chimpanzees and pair of Bactrian Camels. Additionally there have been some births at the Zoo so you’ll be able to see some baby animals.

I’ve seen a lot of Zoo in my lifetime (including the oldest in Europe, which is Budapest Zoo) and one thing I love is to see the animals live happily in their habitat. The more freedom they have (as much as a Zoo can offer them) the better for the animals and for those who visit them. And thankfully, Athens Zoo allows the animals to enjoy their space.

Admission tickets and visiting hours

The Zoo opens every day at 9 AM and closes at sunset. Admission is €14 for an adult and €10 for a child (age 2-10).

To navigate easily in the Zoo (and to make sure you find a toilet when you need it!) be sure to download and print the Park Leaflet (although they will give you one with the tickets as well).
