Acropolis AthensThe new Acropolis Museum was scheduled for completion in 2004 but new archeological discovering at the site and a series of legal issues delayed the opening.

One of the biggest issues related to the museum was the return of the Elgin Marbles from British Museum. The sculptures have been removed from the temple by Scottish diplomat Lord Elgin in the 19th century, when Greece was still part of the Ottoman Empire. Unfortunately, the London museum has been repeatedly declining Greece’s request to return the Marbles.

Culture Minister Michalis Liapis recently announced that the new museum would open in September. All the statues and smaller pieces will be moved from the old museum to the new one, operation which will be completed by the end of March.
