Generally speaking, when a US citizen needs the help of the American Embassy, something went terribly wrong. The American Embassy in Athens and the Consulate General in Thessaloniki are meant to offer assistance to the US citizens living in Greece and those traveling to Greece.
The emergency services offered by the American Embassy include:
- assistance to US citizens arrested in Greece
- assistance to US citizens victims of crimes in Greece
- if a US citizen dies in Greece
- emergency transfer of funds
- access to list of lawyers and doctors
- replacement of lost or stolen passport
Other special consular services are provided, such as reporting birth abroad.
